Falcons improve to 2-0 with win over Packers, 34-23

The Atlanta Falcons (2-0) took the field to face the Green Bay Packers (1-1) in the national Sunday Night Game of the Week looking to start the season with back-to-back wins, and that they did. In a rematch of the teams that closed out the Georgia Dome last season, Atlanta started fast and then held off Green Bay for a 11-point victory, 34-23.

Atlanta took the opening kick and put together a nearly perfect drive to grab a 7-0 lead early.

The drive opened with Devanta Freeman gaining three yards on the first snap of the game, and then Matt Ryan, last season’s MVP, connected with Julio Jones for 23-yards. The two then played catch and run again, this time for a 33-yard gain. After racking up 56 yards through the air, the Falcons went with a ground assault that included Freeman, Taylor Gabriel and Coleman that concluded with Freeman scoring from a yard out. After the Matt Bryan PAT, the home team was up 7-0 just a little over five minutes into the game.

Atlanta took a 17-point advantage, 24-7, to the break that they had extended to 24, 34-10, by the time the final quarter opened. Not a team that quits, Green Bay fought back and put 13 more points on the board to cut their deficit to 11 points, 34-23. After having backed off the press defense with a bigger lead, the Falcons went back to it and were able to shut down the Packers despite the loss of Vic Beasley.

Questions about where the Atlanta offense was following the performance in last week’s win over the Chicago Bears (0-2) were answered by the performance against Green Bay. Matty Ice looked more comfortable with his new throwing motion, and the timing between Ryan and his top two targets, Jones and Mohamed Sanu, was much improved over ast week.

Jones and Sanu each had five receptions, combining for 10 of the Falcons 19 receptions as well as 193 (Jones-108, Sanu-85) of the 252 total passing yards on the night.

The Birds will travel to Motown to take on the Detroit Lions (1-0) for a Week 3 matchup. Detroit is part of the Monday night game tonight, taking on the New York Giants with the Giants going in as 3-point favorites in a game that looks to become a high-scoring affair.
