While the state playoff picture became clearer after the Week 9 game results, the Region 8-AAAAAA title is still to be determined after both Grayson and Dacula extended winning streaks and remain undefeated in the region.

Despite losing to Norcross earlier this season John Urzua and his North Gwinnett teammates may have an advantage in the region title chase.  

All eight teams in Region 7-AAAAAA were off last week meaning that the region standings were unchanged heading into the final three weeks of the GHSA football regular season. Two-time defending state champion Norcross is the only team without a loss in league play and holds the top spot while Collins Hill, Mill Creek, North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge all have one loss in region action.

Cameryn Brent (33) racked up 153 rushing yards for Grayson in the Rams win over Central Gwinnett on Friday night.

Grayson hosted Central Gwinnett on Friday night in a Region 8-AAAAAA contest that matched the undefeated Rams with a Black Knights team that needed a win to stay in the chase for the region title. The Grayson defense was smothering once again and Cameryn Brent powered a ground attack that allowed the Rams to control the clock as Grayson downed Central by a 28-0 count.

Buford is currently ranked No. 2 in Georgia, No. 25 nationally by MaxPreps and shouuld have little difficulty extending their win streak this week when they face winless Monroe Area in a Region 8-AAAA contest.

Week 9 of the GHSA football season will see just 11 of the 23 schools from Gwinnett County take the field while 12, including all of Region 7-AAAAAA, will not play. Of the six games on the schedule that involve county teams, the Region 8-AAAAAA pairing of Central Gwinnett and Grayson looks to be the matchup of the week.

Lanier DT Derrick Brown rambled 52 yards for a pick-6 in the win over Gainesville last Friday night. 

Defensive tackle Derrick Brown has been selected as the Gwinnett Sports Report Week 8 Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Lanier victory over Region 8-AAAAA rival Gainesville. Brown totaled eight tackles including three for losses, deflected a pass and had a pick-6 in the Longhorn 26-23 win over the Red Elephants.

Jamyest Williams totaled 139 yards on 10 carries and scored three TDs in leading Archer to a 24-7 win over South last week.

Jamyest Williams has been selected as the Gwinnett Sports Report Week 8 Offensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in the Archer 24-7 win against South Gwinnett in a Region 8-AAAAAA matchup. Williams totaled 139 yards on just 10 carries and had TD runs of 5, 15 and 58 yards to lead the resurgent Tigers to their third consecutive region W.

Central QB Eric Forrest passed for 334 yards in the win over Brookwood las week, the first W for the Black Knights over the Broncos since 1993.

Week 8 of the GHSA regular season football schedule began with Dacula and Grayson sharing the lead in Region 8-AAAAAA with only the Rams having the opportunity to extend their region unbeaten streak because the Falcons were on a bye this week. Grayson seized the opportunity by defeating Shiloh on the road by 36 points, 42-6, and now sits alone at the top of the region standings with Dacula trailing by a half-game. Both teams are undefeated in region play with the Rams 5-0 and the Falcons 4-0. Archer and Central Gwinnett both looked solid in Week 8 wins and are tied at 3-1 in league play, one-and-a-half games back of Grayson. The Black Knights defeated Brookwood for the first since 1993 and did it in shutout fashion, 32-0.

John Urzua passed for more than 300 yards in leading North Gwinnett to a big region win against Peachtree Ridge.

The week began with both Norcross and Peachtree Ridge 5-1 overall and 3-0 in region play and tied for the lead in Region 7-AAAAAA with Collins Hill, Mill Creek and North Gwinnett all just one game back at 2-1 in league action and ended with the Blue Devils as the only team still undefeated in the region with the Lions, Bulldogs, Eagles and Hawks all one game behind the two-time defending state champions.

It was Military Appreciation Night as Peachtree Ridge hosted North Gwinnett on Friday night in a big Region 7-AAAAAA matchup.

Peachtree Ridge played host to North Gwinnett in a critical Region 7-AAAAAA contest on Friday night that saw both teams score 24 first-half points, but the second 24 minutes was dominated by the Bulldogs as they added 27 points to their total while keeping the Lions off the board on the way to a 51-24 victory. The Lion loss leaves Norcross as the only region undefeated team as the Blue Devils rolled over Meadowcreek in shutout fashion, 49-0.
