Peachtree Ridge quarterback Chance Thrasher has been selected as the Gwinnett Sports Report Offensive Player of the Week for Week 7 after leading the Lions to a 49-6 victory over the Duluth Wildcats in region play.

Dacula senior C.J. Mayes hss been named Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in the Falcons win over Central.

C.J. Mayes has been chosen as the Gwinnett Sports Report Week 7 Defensive Player of the Week after an outstanding all-around effort in the Dacula victory over Central Gwinnett in a game that matched two of the three teams with undefeated marks in Region 8-AAAAAA. Mayes, who plays on both sides of the ball, was a key factor in the Dacula 20-10 win over Cemtral last Friday night.

C.J. Mayes (seen in action against Mill Creek) returned an interception for a first quarter TD as well as rushing for 125 yards in the Dacula win over Central on Friday night.

Region 8-AAAAAA, like Region 7, began Week 7 with three teams (Dacula, Central Gwinnett and Grayson) undefeated in region play and, also like Region 7, two of those teams (Central and Dacula) met on Friday night. The Falcons came away with a big home win to hand the Black Knights their first region loss of the season while Grayson won their game with South Gwinnett in shutout fashion to join Dacula as co-leaders of Region 8.

Senior QB Chance Thrasher totaled 383 total yards (325 passing, 58 rushing) for Peachtree Ridge in the Lion 49-6 win over Duluth.

The Week 7 schedule of the GHSA football season included two of the three undefeated teams in Region 7-AAAAAA, Norcross and North Gwinnett, squaring off in a rematch of last season’s state championship game. While Norcross is a very different team as a result of the loss of 64 seniors, the two-time defending state champions once again have a very good defense- a D that held North to 7 points on the way to a 17-7 Blue Devil victory. The win keeps Norcross undefeated in region play and tied with Peachtree Ridge, who defeated Duluth in a blowout, for the region lead.

Mill Creek senior Tyler Voyles tallied 15 tackles in the Hawks loss to North Gwinnett in Week 6.

Despite Mill Creek and North Gwinnett combining for 92 points and more than 1,000 total yards in their Region 7-AAAAAA contest in Week 6 GHSA football action, there was a defensive standout. Tyler Voyles has been selected the Gwinnett Sports Report Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in the Hawks 51-41 loss to the Bulldogs.

Senior QB John Urzua has totaled more than 1,600 passing yards while leading North to a 40 points per game scoring average this season.  

Once again, Gwinnett County players turned in a number of outstanding performances on the offensive side of the ball in GHSA football action. North Gwinnett quarterback John Urzua has been selected by Gwinnett Sports Report as the Week 6 Offensive Player of the Week for his effort in the Bulldogs win over Mill Creek in a game that saw the teams combine for more than 1,000 total yards.

Dacula is leading the region in scoring despite Giovanni Lugo, their No.1 QB, being injured.

With Week 7 of the GHSA football season here, the region picture is beginning to clear. There are 17 teams that play in AAAAAA (Georgia’s largest classification) that are divided into two regions, 7 and 8, that call Gwinnett County home. A Region 7 recap was previously published; this article takes a look at Region 8. While Region 7 sees the usual suspects holding down the top half of the league, Region 8 looks to be wide open with Dacula and Grayson off to 3-0 region starts followed closely by Central at 2-0. Archer hit some speed bumps early as a result of injuries and begins the week fourth at 1-1.

Week 6 of the GHSA 2014 football season is in the books and the region pictures are beginning to come into focus. Gwinnett is home to 17 teams that play in AAAAAA (Georgia’s largest classification) that are divided into two regions, 7 and 8. Friday night action resulted in teams from both regions establishing early advantages in the chase for the title. In Region 7, Norcross and Peachtree Ridge each had dominating games on their way to big wins while North won a shootout as all improved to 2-0 in region play and grab the early advantage.
