Gladiators open December third in ECHL South

The Atlanta Gladiators (11-8-1-1, 24 Points) head to the third month of the ECHL season in a tie for third place with the South Carolina Stingrays (10-4-3-1, 24 Points) in the South Division. Both Atlanta and South Carolina trail the Florida Everblades (16-2-1-2, 35 Points) and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (12-7-2-0, 26 Points). The Orlando Solar Bears (8-10-3-0, 19 Points), Norfolk Admirals (7-13-0-1, 15 Points) and Jacksonville Icemen (4-11-2-1, 11 Points) round out the standings.

The second round of the Georgia High School Association football playoffs will include seven Gwinnett teams playing in four games from the state’s largest classification, AAAAAAA. Archer, Brookwood, Grayson, Mill Creek, Mountain View, North Gwinnett, and Parkview all earned trips to the second round, but at least three will see their title dreams dashed because they are facing other county teams.

In addition to the five Gwinnett County teams ranked in the 7A Top 10 in the Georgia High School Football Daily final regular season ranking, the county is represented by Buford at No. 2 in AAAAA, and Greater Atlanta Christian at No. 3 in AAA.

Three of the top five, and five of the top 10, football teams in the final regular season Georgia High School Football Daily (GHSFD) AAAAAAA ranking are Gwinnett teams after each closed their regular season schedule with wins. The victories all came in blowout style, and resulted in all five teams maintaining their previous week’s position going into the opening round of the GHSA playoffs.

The Georgia High School Football Daily (GHSFD) AAAAAAA Top 10 once again includes five Gwinnett County teams after Archer (No.2), Grayson (No.4), North Gwinnett (No.5), and Brookwood (No.7) all won their matchups, and Mill Creek (No.10) did not play.

Archer cheerleaders and fans can cheer about the Tigers improving to 8-0 to maintain the No.2 spot in the most recent 7A ranking.

The Georgia High School Football Daily (GHSFD) October 23 AAAAAAA Top 10 again includes five Gwinnett County teams after Archer (No.2), Grayson (No.4), North Gwinnett (No.5), and Brookwood (No.7) all won and maintained their position while Mill Creek (No.10) fell two notches after a tough loss to Mountain View, but remained in the ranking.

Last Thursday (10/12), the East Coweta Lady Indians and Peachtree Ridge Lady Lions met in the first round of the GHSA softball playoffs, and the Indians improved to 30-0 with a two-game sweep of the Lions. It was a fan's delight, as both teams played well. However, on this day the Indians were a little better and their fans went home a tad happier.

The Brookwood Broncos (3-2) hosted the Berkmar Patriots (0-5) on Friday night and came away with a 63-6 victory that was the 300th for the Gwinnett County school. After the blowout victory, Brookwood celebrated win with several former head coaches including Dave Hunter and Mark Crews, who both brought state championship titles to the Gwinnett school.

Gladiators open training camp Sunday

The Atlanta Gladiators open the 2017-2018 campaign with a two-week training camp that will be held at their official practice facility, the Duluth IceForum. The camp starts this weekend, and all on-ice practice sessions held at the IceForum are open to the public at NO COST.

Gwinnett Games of the Week: Week 4

Gwinnett County had five teams that were involved in four games selected by SCORE Atlanta as Game of the Week for Week 4 of the GHSA football season. All but one of the games involved AAAAAAA schools with one pairing county teams. Of the three inter-county matchups, Gwinnett teams posted a 2-1 mark with Meadoecreek and Dacula getting Ws. Central downed Collins Hill in overtime in the all-Gwinnett game.
